‘Without a shadow of a doubt’ – Ex-Spurs star says club should accept rumoured offer

Paul Robinson is convinced that Tottenham would be able to improve their squad if they accepted Barcelona’s rumoured offer for Tanguy Ndombele.

Sky Sports reported last week that the Catalan giants were keen on singing Ndombele this summer and were ready to offer Samuel Umtiti and Nelson Semedo in exchange for the Frenchman.

However, Tottenham are said to have no intention of letting the midfielder leave this summer after just one season in North London (Mirror).

In response to the speculation surrounding his future, the midfielder himself took to Instagram on Monday to post a video of his Spurs highlights with the caption, ‘Nothing to report’ (via Football.London).

This was seen as an indication by some Spurs fans that the former Lyon man wanted to stay and turn his form around.

However, Robinson believes that the offer from Barca is too good for the Lilywhites to turn down and insisted that Umtiti’s arrival, in particular, would help to fix Spurs’ defensive issues.

Speaking to Football Insider, the former Tottenham goalkeeper said: “Umtiti would be outstanding for Spurs. If Barcelona are willing to let him go as part of a deal I think he would be a great signing for Tottenham. Experienced, top-class defender.

“They have struggled at the back this year and have conceded too many goals and they are goals they should not concede. If Umtiti is available I would take him, without a shadow of a doubt.

“Semedo or Umtiti would be an unbelievable swap deal and it would excite Spurs fans.”

Umtiti on his day is as good a left-sided centre half as any in the world but his injury record over the past few seasons makes the deal extremely risky. I am not convinced Semedo will be too much of an upgrade over Aurier as the Portuguese full-back also has defensive frailties. The only way the club should consider letting Ndombele go is if Barcelona offer one of either Arthur or Coutinho as a part of the deal.
