‘Won’t be smiling’ – Ian Wright sends message to Levy after Postecoglou’s statement

Ian Wright has challenged Daniel Levy to back Ange Postecoglou in the transfer market so that the Australian can achieve the lofty ambitions that he has set for Tottenham.

While the likes of Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho tended to play down Tottenham’s ambitions when they were in charge of Spurs, Postecoglou has done just the opposite, having admitted publicly that he wants to see the club challenge for the Premier League title.

In fact, the 58-year-old has been happy to put pressure on himself, stating that he wants to compete for major honours as early as next season rather than hiding behind the guise of a long-term project (The Standard).

However, there is no doubt that Spurs will need to add significant reinforcements to their squad if they wish to close the gap with the best sides in the division.

It was reported by ESPN on Tuesday that the Tottenham boss is realistic about the scale of change he can achieve in one window and asked the club’s hierarchy for at least three top-class additions this summer, including a central midfielder and striker.

Daniel Levy needs to back Ange Postecoglou at Spurs

Wright believes that it is now up to the club’s owners to give Postecoglou the tools he needs to achieve what he has set out to.

The Arsenal legend said on Match of the Day (19/05/24): “I think him saying he has lofty ambitions for the club. Until he reaches that point, he won’t be smiling too much. They have a manager that wants to win.

“You are hoping now that Daniel Levy will back him because the last couple of weeks have really opened his eyes. This manager needs backing now. He’s a winner. That’s what he needs now. They have had too many managers saying the same thing.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not doubt that Levy and the Tottenham board will back Postecoglou. The Spurs chairman finally has a manager who will not bad-mouth the club publicly and someone who is willing to take responsibility for the team’s failures.

Levy will appreciate that after years of seeing Mourinho and Conte deflect blame and publicly throw the players under the bus after losses. I am convinced that the Tottenham supremo will give Ange every chance to succeed.
