Jonathan Woodgate makes claim about Spurs-linked defender after Paratici reveal

Former Tottenham defender Jonathan Woodgate has insisted there would be ‘something wrong’ if rumoured Spurs target Djed Spence is not picked up by a Premier League club soon.

Spence, who is having an outstanding campaign on loan at Nottingham Forest from Middlesbrough, is reportedly on the radar of top-flight clubs including Spurs.

The Northern Echo backed Antonio Conte’s men to make a deadline day move for the young right-back during the January window.

If 90 min are to be believed, Spurs did make a move for the youngster late in the window but the North London club saw their £12m offer being knocked back by Boro.

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold revealed in his latest YouTube video (1:01:53) that Tottenham’s managing director of football Fabio Paratici was expected to be in attendance at the City Ground to run the rule over Spence in Forests’ FA Cup clash against Leicester.

Spence played a starring role in that game and netted Forest’s fourth goal as the Championship club thrashed the Foxes 4-1.

On the back of Spence’s performance on Sunday, Woodgate told BBC Sport: “That’s another £10m on Djed Spence’s price tag.

“What a performance by him. If Spence isn’t a Premier League player next season, there is something wrong.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Spence will certainly be picked up by a Premier League club in the summer and he is unlikely to prove too expensive, given that his contract with Boro only runs until 2023 (Transfermarkt).

However, I would rather see Spurs pay a little extra to snap up Lamptey instead as I believe the Brighton man would be a much safer bet and would instantly improve our starting eleven.
