‘World class’ – Antonio Conte praises Spurs man after display against Palace

Antonio Conte has commended Harry Kane’s qualities as a player as well as a leader after the striker scored another brace in the win over Crystal Palace last night.

If there were any doubts whether any lingering heartbreak following his penalty miss in the World Cup quarterfinal would affect Kane, the 29-year-old has already put that to rest with three goals in three matches since the Premier League’s restart.

The striker met Ivan Perisic’s floated cross to the far post with typical authority in 48 minutes to give Spurs the lead at Selhurst Park before doubling the away side’s lead five minutes later as he smashed the ball into the bottom corner after a quick interchange with Bryan Gil on the right.

The brace against the Eagles took his tally for the Premier League season to 15 goals (Transfermarkt) and the 29-year-old is now just three goals away from overtaking Jimmy Greaves’ all-time goals record for the Lilywhites (Reuters).

When asked about Kane, Conte told Football.London after his side’s win over Palace: “Yeah but to speak about Harry we waste time to explain about the type of player he is. I repeat we are talking about a really world-class striker and he is going to beat every record with the goals.

“For us, he’s an important point of reference not only with the goals but on the pitch, with Hugo our captain. Especially in the difficult moments, you know Harry is on the pitch, ready to fight, ready to help his teammates, ready to sort the situation with goals and assists.”

If not for the freakish season that Erling Haaland is having, Kane would be getting a lot more plaudits for his goals record this season.

The England captain is on course to have the most productive season of his career and I certainly would not put it past him to win the Golden Boot even though he finds himself six goals behind Haaland, particularly given the City star’s injury record.
