World cup winner could make a two-year return to football against Tottenham Hotspur

One former Premier League player could soon line up against Tottenham Hotspur in his first match in more than two years.

Tottenham Hotspur got off to a good start in the Champions League, defeating Villarreal 1-0 in their opening match. This was followed by a less-than-impressive 2-2 draw with Bodo/Glimt.

Next up Spurs face AS Monaco, who most recently rescued a draw in stoppage time against Manchester City. Eric Dier was the man to score a penalty in the dying stages of the game and he will take on his former club later this month in an anticipated reunion.

The match could be significant for more reasons than one, because it could be the day a former Premier League midfielder returns to the pitch for the first time since September 2023.

Paul Pogba could be selected to face Tottenham

Paul Pogba is the man who could be about to get back in action after a lengthy spell away from the game. He was handed a four-year ban for a failed drugs test, but this was downgraded to last October to 18 months.

Juventus released Pogba in November 2024, but he was signed by Monaco in June this year. The Frenchman is yet to make an appearance, but will return to the pitch after the international break.

According to Sport Witness, Pogba could make his first appearance in over two years on October 18 against Angers. However, if this is not the case, Tottenham are the team he is likely to face in his first match back.

Pogba’s record against Spurs

Pogba has made eight appearances in all competitions against Tottenham as a Manchester United player. He has never found the back of the net against the North London club, but has registered four assists. As well as this, Manchester United have won five fixtures against Spurs when he has played and lost three, while one match ended in a draw.

However, Pogba did play the full 90 minutes when Tottenham thrashed Man United 6-1 at Old Trafford five years ago when Jose Mourinho was in charge.

Both Spurs and Monaco could use a win when they meet in the Champions League, and there is a good chance it will be a close game. It will be a quick turnaround for Tottenham, who face Aston Villa three days before.
