Some Tottenham fans on social media have completely dismissed rumours linking the North London club with a move for Barcelona midfielder Philippe Coutinho after claiming there is no way Daniel Levy will meet Barcelona’s asking price.
Coutinho has spent the 2019/20 campaign on loan at Bayern Munich, but reports suggest that the Bundesliga giants are not keen on taking up the option to sign him permanently in the summer (Mirror).
Tottenham have been heavily linked with a move for the Brazilian in recent weeks and his agent Kia Joorabchian has admitted that the prospect of returning to the Premier League is very appealing for the former Liverpool star (Sky Sports).
However, some Spurs fans do not believe the club will spend the kind of money it will take to bring him to North London.
On the back of Daniel Levy’s decision to cut wages of their non-playing staff by 20% for April and May, they questioned if the Spurs chairman will be prepared to spend big in the transfer market.
Here’s how some fans reacting the latest reports linking Spurs with a move for the 27-year-old:
Can’t afford to pay staff but looking to buy Coutinho. Pretty confident that won’t happen 🙄

That kind of money could be spent on so much better options

No way we pay his wage demands. But he’s the Eriksen replacement we are looking to fill. Creativity from the wing to look to make something happen.
Our build up play is so slow as is, so we’re not investing in his pace, or lack of… #ttid #coys

I’m sure they will be happy to pay him £250,000 a week
— Adrian Croft (@ade_manuk) April 11, 2020
Bet they don’t sign anyone.
— Bret Fart (@BrendenLuft) April 11, 2020
No chance Levy won’t pay it
— Timothy Minihane (@MinihaneTim) April 11, 2020
Would be good, but will never happen

No cash to pay their employees, but 70mil + to buy phil? 🤔
— Lee Siemaszko (@leesiemaszko) April 11, 2020
Has £70m (+) for one man but can't pay their staff in full?
— Anshul (@Anshul__K) April 11, 2020
Yeah get the public to pay for him like #enicout
— Blair Dunlop (@BlairDunlop) April 11, 2020
what is the point – it is never going to happen!!! #levy…
— OriginRiddim (@OriginRiddim) April 11, 2020
So £2.50 and a pack pork scratchings is Levy’s final offer.
— Wile E Coyote (@Acme_Corps) April 11, 2020
Obvious economic factors. Meaning we can’t afford him. Meaning this is more pointless spin. If this tweet ages badly, I’ll happily have it pointed back at me.

Would he be immediately furloughed?

Spurs Web Opinion
I am much more optimistic with regards to this transfer than these fans as I believe we are missing a player of his profile in the squad. I don’t believe we are likely to complete a permanent transfer but a loan deal is very much a possibility given Barcelona’s desperation to get him off their wage bill.
