‘Would not have gone there’ – James Maddison makes Spurs trophy claim

James Maddison has insisted that he would not have joined Tottenham Hotspur this summer if he did not believe the club were capable of winning trophies.

The England international sealed a £40million switch to the North Londoners in June following Leicester City’s relegation to the Championship, with Newcastle United having also been interested in his services (Sky Sports).

Tottenham have not won a competitive piece of silverware since lifting the League Cup back in 2008 while Juande Ramos was in charge and remains the only trophy of the ENIC ownership.

A disappointing eighth-place finish last season means that new head coach Ange Postecoglou will only have domestic football to focus on, with Tottenham not involved in European competition for the first time in over a decade.

James Maddison believes Spurs can win trophies

Maddison told talkSPORT: “It is well documented by you lot that Spurs have not won a trophy in a long time by the media. Honestly, if I didn’t think that Tottenham were not capable of winning a trophy then I would not have gone there, I genuinely believe that.

“People can write whatever they want to write but we need to have that focus and that determination and hunger to be the team that does bring Tottenham silverware. That’s the aim and ambition.”

It is clear to see that James Maddison is going to be one of the leaders in the Tottenham dressing room this summer with the hunger and determination he has, especially after suffering the disappointment of relegation last season.

Spurs have lacked genuine leadership in recent years, not just those who do the talking off the pitch – but can also back up their words by leading on the pitch and being able to grab a match by the scruff off its neck and create a piece of magic to turn the result around.
