‘Wouldn’t be a good choice’ – Former coach warns club against signing Spurs star

Former Bologna winger, Luca Cecconi has warned the Serie A club against signing Erik Lamela, insisting that the Argentine is not the kind of player that the club needs at the moment.

Lamela has been in very good form over the last couple of months and has managed to stay relatively injury-free this season compared to the last few campaigns.

The 29-year-old seems to have won Mourinho’s trust, with the Spurs boss admitting earlier in the season that the former Roma man is a player he likes a lot.

However, reports indicate that Lamela’s future at Spurs is in doubt, with the midfielder, who is about to run into the final year of his contract, set for talks over his future with the club’s hierarchy.

Bologna sporting director, Walter Sabatini, admitted earlier this week that the Italian club are exploring the possibility of snapping up Lamela in the summer.

However, Cecconi, who played over 50 times for Bologna and had two different spells with them as an assistant coach and a caretaker manager, insisted that the Tottenham star does not fit the profile of players that the club should be going for.

Cecconi told TuttoMercatoWeb regarding Bologna’s interest in Lamela: “Lamela does not convince me, he does not fall into the category of players I was referring to before,” Cecconi said.

“For him, joining Bologna would be a step backwards. The stimuli would not be among the highest. Beyond player value, it wouldn’t be a good choice.”

Spurs Web Opinion

If we are judging based on performances this season, Lamela certainly deserves to stay at Spurs. However, given the Argentine’s injury record, his value could diminish substantially once he hits his thirties.

So Tottenham have a decision to make as to whether to award him a new contract or just cash him on him this summer while they can still get decent value for him in the market.
