‘Wouldn’t be able to get away with it’ – Doherty makes Conte training admission

Matt Doherty has insisted that no Tottenham player would be able to get away with not putting in 100 per cent in training.

One of the themes of Antonio Conte’s press conferences in his four and a half months at the helm at Spurs has been the Italian’s repeated insistence that the players need to keep working hard in training to improve (Football.London).

Even though the team’s results have been inconsistent over recent months, the improvement among various individuals is certainly evidently.

Doherty has come on leaps and bounds over recent weeks, establishing himself as Conte’s first-choice at right wing-back and seemingly growing in confidence with every start.

The Republic of Ireland international took control of Tottenham’s official Twitter profile as a part of St Patrick’s Day and answered questions from Spurs fans.

As part of the Q&A, the former Wolves man was asked who the hardest worker in training was among the Spurs squad.

Here’s how Doherty responded: ‘Honestly, I don’t want to sound like I’m sitting on the fence but everybody is working their socks off to maintain standards as you just wouldn’t be able to get away with it if you didn’t.’

Conte clearly sets high standards for himself, which is perhaps why he sounds so emotional after defeats. So, one can imagine that the Italian would not entertain any player not giving 100 per cent in every training session.

In fact, one of the reasons that the 52-year-old might have wanted the likes of Ndombele, Lo Celso and Dele to leave, could be that they did not train with the intensity that he expects on a regular basis.
