‘Wouldn’t get too excited’ – Alasdair Gold shares understanding of Spurs’ chase for defender

Alasdair Gold has admitted Tottenham have not made further progress with their attempt to sign Middlesbrough defender Djed Spence.

Spurs have taken a liking to the right wing-back this summer after he impressed during his season-long loan spell at Nottingham Forest last season.

Antonio Conte’s side are in advanced talks with Boro about a transfer with an agreement edging closer ahead of the start of pre-season (Lyall Thomas).

Sky Sports note the deal could see Spence move to north London for an initial £15 million fee which could be increased with add-ons.

Middlesbrough manager Chris Wilder preciously revealed the England U21 international is keen to seal a switch to north London but warned he is expected to return to pre-season training if a deal is not struck by then (The Northern Echo).

But while Spurs continue to plug away at securing a switch for Spence, Football.London journalist Gold insists there has not been much movement towards a transfer coming together.

He said on his YouTube channel: “It’s a very strange one, from what I understand right now, there’s been no progress on this one.

“We know the facts of this one. We know Wilder has said he expects the move to happen, Spence wants to come to Tottenham, Middlesbrough want to get the most they can for him, while Spurs think he’s a very talented young man. But his current level of performance and experience is one very good season in the Championship.”

The deal for Spence appears to be dragging quite a bit as both clubs seem to be slightly apart when it comes to the transfer fee. It does look like it will happen eventually so we will just have to keep patient.
