‘Wow’ – Portsmouth manager gives his early review of Spurs’ Dane Scarlett

Portsmouth boss Danny Cowley has delivered his initial assessment on Tottenham Hotspur loanee Dane Scarlett, and it is certainly positive.

Scarlett made his switch from Tottenham to Fratton Park on a season-long loan deal this summer (Daily Mail).

He has featured in four matches so far for his new club, with two appearances being off the bench and two from the start in the victory against Cardiff City in the Carabao Cup and the league win over Cheltenham (Transfermarkt).

Despite not yet opening his account with Pompey, the English starlet has already made quite an impression among his teammates since joining them (Jonathan Veal).

Scarlett’s new teammate Joe Pigott also admitted that to be the case after both of them partnered up front in the win over Cardiff (The News).

Scarlett is widely regarded as one of the best young prospects to have risen through the Hotspur Way academy in recent years. He seems to be one to look forward to in the future should he continue to maintain this exciting trajectory.

Cowley has now confirmed that Scarlett has indeed made a big impact since joining, with the manager lauding the 18-year-old’s knack for defending from the front while also being an incisive threat in the attacking department.

Speaking in an interview with The Portsmouth News, Cowley said: “I think Dane, against the ball, is ‘wow’.

“For an 18-year-old, his understanding of how to defend from the front, and the speed and aggression that he can go and press the ball, is like he’s got the eye of the tiger.

“He’s got this ruthless streak to his game, both against the ball – how quickly he gets up to it – but also then his movement and his reactive quality. In training, he’s looked really exciting and it’s lovely from our perspective.

“We’re so privileged to be able to wake up every morning and be able to come in and watch such a young talent grow and develop.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

It is well known how highly Antonio Conte rated Scarlett, having deemed him to be the best upcoming talent from the academy setup (Football.London). The Italian coach also conveyed how he expects the attacker to have a “brilliant future” moving forward (The Express).

If that is the case, then Conte would be delighted to hear Cowley’s latest admission regarding Scarlett. After all, the former Inter Milan boss is known for wanting his frontline options to put considerable effort into defending while also being an attacking threat at the same time.

Perhaps, the teenager could enjoy a great time under the man in charge if he continues to progress in this manner by getting the best out of this loan spell.
