‘Wow’ – Pundits react as Tottenham man scores important goal for national side

BBC Sport pundits Helen Ward and Sam Vokes were over the moon with Brennan Johson scored Wales’ third in their win over Finland, with the former praising the Tottenham man for his instinct.

Johnson has come on leaps and bounds over the last few months at Tottenham and is now regularly impacting games as a starter as well as a substitute.

The 22-year-old has taken his club form to the international arena, finding the back of the net for Wales in their all-important Euros playoff semifinal against Finland in Cardiff.

The Tottenham man led the line for the Dragons, who were captained by Ben Davies and also had Joe Rodon at the back, with the home side running 4-1 winners to set up a clash against Ukraine next week for a place in the Euros.

Brennan Johnson impresses for Wales

With the game finely poised at 2-1, Johnson turned the ball home at the far post after getting on the end of David Brooks’ scuffed effort to give his side some breathing space.

Reacting to Johnson’s goal, Ward said on BBC Radio Wales (21/03/24): “Wow, wow, wow. Fantastic start again from Wales. Rob Page will be chuffed with that. Brennan Johnson in the right place to turn it home.”

Vokes then said: “Brennan Johnson won’t believe his luck, his eyes must have lit up when he saw the ball coming towards him. Finland worked hard to get back into the game before half-time and now they have got to do it all again.”

Johnson is slowly but surely filling some of the void left by Gareth Bale for Wales, with the forward becoming the main goal threat for Robert Page’s men. If the Dragons do make it to the Euros, they will be heavily reliant on the Tottenham man to deliver in Germany.
