‘Written in the stars’ – Some Spurs fans react after Luis Campos leaves Lille

Some Spurs fans on social media are desperately hoping that Tottenham Hotspur appoint Luis Campos as their director of football after Lille announced that they would be parting ways with him.

Campos was previously said to be on Tottenham’s radar with a potential reunion with Mourinho, who he worked with at Real Madrid being mooted as a possibility (L’Equipe via 90min).

There was speculation in the summer that Campos had asked to be relieved from his position as Lille’s sporting director due to disagreements with the club’s recent strategic decisions (RMC SPORT) but he ended up staying at the Ligue 1 club.

The Daily Record reported back in November that Campos was in the middle of a power struggle over control of transfer affairs with club director-general Marc Ingla but it was suggested that the 55-year-old was likely to stay.

Campos, who is credited with helping unearth the likes of Kylian Mbappe, James Rodriguez, Anthony Martial, Fabinho, Bernardo Silva and Benjamin Mendy (Sky Sports), is now officially out of work.

Some Spurs fans see Trevor Birch birch leaving his job as Tottenham’s director of football operations a couple of weeks ago as further evidence that Campos could be on his way to North London.

As reported at the time, Birch’s primary role at the club was more about overseeing the business side of things, particularly due to the financial pressures imposed on the club by the pandemic. Steve Hitchen as the club’s technical performance director seems to have more of a say on transfers and it is his role that Campos would likely takeover should he arrive at Spurs.

However, Spurs fans are right in being optimistic about the possibility of the 55-year-old joining the club. Even though the likes of Manchester United are also likely to be after him, one would expect Jose to be on the phone with the 55-year-old to try to convince him to come to North London.
