Graham Roberts has revealed that he has been impressed by Cristian Romero, describing the Argentine as a ‘proper defender’.
Romero’s impressive showing for Atalanta last season and his solid performances in Argentina’s successful Copa America campaign during the summer convinced Tottenham to snap up the centre-back.
Spurs agreed on an initial loan deal for the 23-year-old with an option to buy him permanently for £42.5m.
Following a tricky start to his Tottenham career, Romero has established himself as a regular in Nuno Espirito Santo’s starting eleven over the last few weeks and has put in some great battling displays.
The former Atalanta man also seems to have developed a solid partnership with Eric Dier at the back.
Romero started alongside Davinson Sanchez at central defence in Tottenham’s Carabao Cup clash against Burnley yesterday and he certainly coped impressively with the Clarets’ physicality and aggression.
The Argentina international helped the Lilywhites come away with a clean sheet and seal progression into the quarterfinal of the competition.

Here’s what legendry Spurs defender Roberts tweeted about Romero following Tottenham’s 1-0 win at Turf Moor:
Spurs Web Opinion
I have to admit that I had my doubts about Romero when we signed him as I feared that the risky tendency he has to always try and win the ball early, might have left him exposed on a few occasions.
However, along with his natural aggression, the 23-year-old also seems to be a very good reader of the game. The early signs are that we have a potential world-class centre-back on our hands.
