‘You can pay for the wrong choices’ – Forward warns team-mate against Spurs move

Rennes midfielder Eduardo Camavinga has been warned against moving to Tottenham Hotspur this summer by his teammate M’Baye Niang, amid reports that the North London side are keen on the teenager.

Camavinga has established himself as a key part of the Rennes midfield since breaking into the side towards the end of the last campaign.

The 17-year-old has shown maturity beyond his years this campaign after slotting into the midfield pivot role for the Ligue 1 side and helping to shield the back four.

Spanish publication Sport reported in March that Spurs and Liverpool were both interested in signing the 17-year-old.

Football.London revealed last month that the Lilywhites are contemplating making a move for the France Under-21 international, who is said to be valued at around £43million.

Rennes’ rising star is also said to be interesting Real Madrid with Marca claiming that Zinedine Zidane rates the midfielder very highly.

However, Niang believes that moving to North London or Madrid too early might damage Camavinga’s chances of fulfilling his potential.

When asked about Tottenham’s rumoured interest in the young midfielder, the striker said in an Instagram Q&A (as relayed by Goal): “The advice I have to give him because he seems to be a guy with his head on his shoulders, I know his parents, who know where they want to go, is to make the right choices.

“I talked about it with him, I won’t talk about it here, but I already talked with him, that in life it is better to make the right choices than to go too fast.

“Because at some point, you have requests where you say to yourself: ‘How am I going to refuse them if guys like Zidane or Mourinho call?’ That’s when you really have to ask yourself and say, ‘What are these people going to bring me?’

“The Rennes coach brought you something, and if you leave, this club will bring you much more, it will make you grow. I told him to make the right choices, to talk to his representatives, to his parents, to watch young people his age in these clubs.

“His parents know what they want, this is the most important. You really have to take this seriously because you can pay for the wrong choices.”

The reality is that Ligue 1 clubs have taken a huge financial hit due to the season being cancelled and thus will be keen to recoup some funds. Rennes might thus have no choice but to sell Camavinga this summer. However, I doubt we will be interested in the youngster at the reported price when we can get Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg for less than half the price.
