“You shouldn’t lose games like that” – Spurs midfielder’s honest assessment after Southampton defeat

Tottenham Hotspur crashed to a surprise 2-1 defeat at Southampton yesterday in what was a proverbial game of two halves.

Spurs were the better side for the entirety of the first half as they opened up their opposition at will, and created a lot of chances.

Harry Kane had several opportunities in the game, and could only capitalise on one to put Spurs ahead after being put through on goal by the returning Dele Alli.

Tottenham could have put the game out of sight by half time but failed to convert their chances and could only go into the break with a one-goal advantage.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl made two changes at the interval as the Saints came out pressing Spurs high up the field. Tottenham folded under pressure as Yann Valery equalised for the host after a defensive lapse of concentration from Danny Rose before James Ward Prowse scored the winner through a brilliant free kick.

After the game, Tottenham midfield Christian Eriksen admitted that the team cannot afford to lose games like the one yesterday which they were in complete control of.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Eriksen said, “You shouldn’t lose games like that and we can’t in the position we’re in.”

“We had a very good first half but everything changed in the second half.”
