Young centre-back directly addresses transfer rumours amidst Spurs links

In a potential blow to Tottenham, rumoured target Mohamed Simakan has admitted that his priority is to remain at Strasbourg for the time being.

Tottenham are reported to be one of several European clubs chasing Simakan’s signature, along with the likes of Everton, Southampton, AC Milan, RB Leipzig, and Borussia Dortmund, off the back of a terrific season in Ligue 1 (RMC Sport).

The 19-year-old has established himself as an important part of the Strasbourg side since breaking into the team at the start of the campaign and has proven that he is more than capable of playing at both centre-back and right-back.

His versatility could be a vital asset for Spurs given that the North Londoners are said to be looking for reinforcements in both of these positions (Sky Sports).

Simakan’s agent, Badou Sambage (Transfer20), as well as Strasbourg manager Thierry Laurey (20 minutes), have further fueled speculation surrounding the youngster’s future by hinting that he could leave the Ligue 1 side this summer.

However, the defender himself has now dismissed the speculation as mere rumours. Simakan told Telefoot: “I haven’t heard anything, these are rumours.

“For now, I prefer to focus on Strasbourg because today I am here and I find that everything is fine here and we will have to continue like this.

“The priority is to stay at Strasbourg.”

It is hard to read too much into this statement as Simakan seems to be taking a diplomatic stance on his future. It is likely that many Ligue 1 clubs, including Strasbourg, will need to sell off some of their assets this summer, given the financial hit they have taken due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent cancellation of the League.
