‘Your day will arrive’ – Mourinho sends message to attacking midfielder

Jose Mourinho has told Dilan Markanday on social media after Tottenham’s 4-0 win over Wolfsberger that he will soon get his chance.

It was a perfect night for Spurs yesterday after they produced a dominant performance to brush the Austrian side aside.

The nature of the win as the goals for Dele Alli and Gareth Bale brought back some good feeling around the club on the back of the doom and gloom caused by the team’s poor run of recent form.

Another pleasing aspect of Tottenham’s win was the fact that a few of the club’s academy players were given game time.

With the result of the tie being a foregone conclusion, Mourinho decided to hand Dane Scarlett his third senior appearance of the season, while also bringing defender Marcus Lavinier and midfielder Nile John off the bench for their first-team debuts.

All three players showed their quality, with Scarlett even setting up Carlos Vinicius’ second goal and Tottenham’s fourth late on.

Markanday, another academy player who has been in fine form for the Under-23s this season, was also named on the bench but was an unused substitute.

The 19-year-old took to Instagram to admit that it was a great experience to be part of the first-team squad for the tie and Mourinho responded to the attacking midfielder’s post with the comment: “Your day will arrive”.

Spurs Web Opinion

Jose has really shown over the course of the season, particularly in the Europa League that he is willing to facilitate the pathway to the first-team for the academy players. That suggests that the Spurs boss is very much viewing the job as a long-term project and wants to build something for the future.
