Paul Merson has strongly disagreed with the suggestion that James Maddison and Rodrigo Bentancur are among the four best midfielders in the Premier League alongside Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri.
While Maddison was always considered to be one of the most talented playmakers in the Premier League during his Leicester days, his reputation has blossomed further since his switch to Tottenham.
Now that he is playing alongside more technically proficient players in a position that suits him down to a tee in Ange Posteocoglou’s system, the attacking midfielder has demonstrated that he certainly belongs in the same conversation among the best players in the division.
Tottenham could welcome back Maddison after nearly a three-month absence in the upcoming FA Cup clash against Manchester City (Telegraph) and we might see him play in the same team as Bentancur for the first time, with the Uruguayan having been out injured at the start of the season.

Ahead of the showdown between Spurs and City on Friday, Merson has laughed off suggestions that the Tottenham duo are in the same league as Rodrio and De Bryne.

Most Spurs fans would agree that Maddison and Bentancur can be compared to De Bruyne and Rodri respectively at the moment as the latter have delivered big performances at the highest level for a longer duration.
However, I do not think the Spurs fan that Merson is quote tweeting is suggesting that the Tottenham pair are better than the City duo. He is instead opining that these four are a cut above the rest in the Premier League, which is not an opinion I agree with, but that is an argument that can be made.
