“You’re getting older” – Former Chelsea midfielder sends message to Spurs stars

Tottenham Hotspur have come a long way in the past five seasons under the stewardship of Mauricio Pochettino. The Argentine has turned the club into Champions League regulars and one that always competes in the top end of the table.

He has managed to do this despite presiding over a tricky period for the club which involved a transition into a new stadium. Despite playing almost two full seasons away from home and spending negligible amounts on transfers, Lilywhites have been able to compete with teams who have considerably outspent them over the last few years.

However, despite these achievements, one fact continues to loom large over Pochettino and the current Spurs team – they are yet to get their hands on a major trophy.

Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole has now said that the time has come for the Lilywhites to go all out for trophies this season. Remembering his playing days, the former England international said that it was the trophies he won that were the proudest moment of his footballing career.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Cole said, “I’m a romantic when it comes to that kind of thing. I think winning a trophy is the main thing.

“I think of myself and the days we won things [at Chelsea]. I don’t think of the times where we got to the quarter-finals of a competition and we played well or we got to the last four.

“You remember the days, both as a fan and as a player, when you go to Wembley and win things.”

The former Chelsea man said that it was about time that Tottenham’s stars added a trophy to their name as they were now getting older.

The 37-year-old added, “I think Spurs as a club have been ran fantastically well for the last 10 to 15 years.

“They’ve developed and come on a bundle, but I feel like if I’m working for Spurs now I’d be saying to those lads you’ve got that experience under your belt now, you’ve had this great run [to the Champions League final].

“You’re already getting older so now’s the time, if they’re going to be a proper team, to put some silverware on the table.”

Cole is certainly right in saying that it is about time the Lilywhites started winning trophies with the talent the club has at its disposal. We at Spurs Web believe that getting to the finals of the Champions League last season will give the players the confidence needed to go that one final step.
