‘You’re wrong’ – Pundits argue whether Spurs fans could turn against Harry Kane

Gary Lineker has disagreed with Alan Shearer’s claim that Tottenham fans would not criticise Harry Kane if he left the club, claiming some ‘half-turned against him’ last summer.

Kane, 28, has endured a mixed campaign this season where he initially scored just once in his first 13 Premier League outings (Transfermarkt).

He has since returned to form under Antonio Conte while recording eight goals and seven assists since the turn of the year, which has lifted Spurs up to fourth place in the table.

While things for the England captain appear to be going well, rumours of a move away from North London are beginning to swirl ahead of the summer, with Manchester United emerging as the latest side to be interested in a transfer (The Athletic).

But former Newcastle striker Shearer feels no Spurs fan would hold a grudge if Kane left the club given the quality of his growth and performances in recent seasons.

He said on the Match of the Day: Top 10 podcast: “I don’t think there’ll be one Tottenham fan who would criticise him now if he was to demand a move.”

Lineker, though, disagreed with Shearer’s notion, suggesting there were plenty of unhappy Spurs fans last summer amidst rumours of Kane pushing for a move to Manchester City (The Guardian).

He replied: “Oh, I think you’re wrong, they half-turned against him in the summer.

“A lot of them turned against him for a while, and he’s won them around recently, even though it’s not been his best season, he’s put in some unbelievable performances as of late, but they turned against him, they did, there’s no question about that.”

Kane’s form in 2022 has been excellent and no doubt it will attract interest from a number of clubs at the end of the season. Spurs will, of course, do their best to keep hold of him again.

The argument is tricky as all Spurs fans want their best players to stay, but he wants to win silverware and it is unfortunate that he hasn’t managed to achieve that at the club just yet. If Conte can convince him to stay, though, then that is a completely different story.
