Zidane praises ‘superior’ Tottenham

According to an article in The Mail Zinedine Zidane has said he is not concerned by Real Madrid’s level of performance against Tottenham but did concede Mauricio Pochettino’s side were ‘superior’ in every aspect on Wednesday night in a memorable night at Wembley.

Real Madrid have, by their standards, had a poor start to the season and it took a significant turn for the worse as the outstanding Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen scored to give Tottenham a 3-0 lead at Wembley, with a consolation from Cristiano Ronaldo doing little to soften the blow.

Zidane wasn’t critical of his charges chosing instead to praise the quality of our lads and admitted Pochettino’s men had outclassed the reigning European champions in ‘all aspects’ of the game.

Zidane told reporters: ‘I’m not worried and I never will be this season. Sometimes there are periods when the goals fly in. Sometimes it just doesn’t want to go in.
‘We came up against a better team. In all aspects of play they were superior.’

The France football hero was asked if Tottenham can challenge for the title, to which he said: ‘Yes, any team can win the Champions League and Tottenham are certainly one of them.’

Madrid suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Catalan side Girona last weekend and now sit eight points behind arch rivals Barcelona in the league and losing to us last night and bar us falling asleep for the last two games means they are likely to finish second in their Champions League group and face a tougher draw in the first knockout round.

Zidane did admit all is not well in the Real Madrid dressing room, however he implored his players to knuckle down and to accept they came up against a side who deserved to beat them.

He added: ‘I can’t say everything is great in the dressing room. We have to turn it around. We played against a team that played very well and deserved the win.’

Madrid hero or not Perez’s (Madrid Chairman) trigger finger will be very itchy right now. However it shows the measure of the man to not immediately criticise his players and to admit they were beaten by the better team on the night.
