Five things we learned from Tottenham’s 3-1 win against Crystal Palace

Tottenham Hotspur bounced back in style with a 3-1 win over Crystal Palace in the Premier League this afternoon, with Ange Postecoglou’s side coming from behind to take all three points.

Let’s take a look at the five things we learned from the match:

Timo Werner really needed that goal

After missing a couple of decent chances today, the pressure would have really started to mount on Timo Werner if he ended the day goalless again. Luckily, he was gifted an unmissable opportunity thanks to Brennan Johnson‘s brilliant work down the right.

Hopefully this goal can be the start of a decent run for Werner, who will surely play more now Richarlison is out injured.

Brennan Johnson changed the game completely

Johnson was brought on with roughly 30 minutes to go, and ended up arguably being Tottenham’s best player today. He may have missed an absolute sitter with his very first touch, but he more than made up for it when he stole the ball off Joachim Andersen, weaved into the box, and played Werner in for the equaliser.

Some fantastic running, intense pressing, and battling for the ball showed just how willing and driven Johnson is to succeed, and his constant pressure also led to the goal for Son, too.

James Maddison is a genius

OK, we already knew this technically, but James Maddison showed once again today that he is capable of producing magic when we need it the most. He was non-stop today, using his trickery and agility to cause Palace problems, and he always looked like making something happen today.

His assist for Romero’s goal was unbelievable. To have the vision to even see that pass is one thing, but to pull it off with a wonderful lob, is just genius. We are very lucky to have him.

Spurs need to take their chances sooner

Tottenham may have got the all-important three points today, but they didn’t make it easy for themselves. Yet again, the Lilywhites had to come from behind to get the win, but they could and should have been in front in the first half.

Far too often, Spurs are missing big opportunities and they just don’t seem to be dominating the games like they did earlier in the season. It’s all well and good creating chances, but we have to be more clinical if we truly want to challenge at the top of the league.

Top four back in sight

Nevertheless, it’s a good day for Spurs, and the hopes of a top four finish (or more) are back. After the defeat against Wolves two weeks ago, it’s not going to be easy, but losing today would have made it almost impossible to catch Aston Villa.

With a game in hand, and Villa up next for Spurs, it’s all to play for, and this win could well give us the momentum needed to break into the Champions League spots.
