Gallery: Five transfer window buys who have proven to be a bargain for Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur went over 500 days across two transfer windows without signing a single first-team player. It came as a surprise for many, and angered most fans. Most pundits wrote off Tottenham’s season.

Yet despite the lack of signings and lack of squad depth at crucial times during the season, the club went on to reach the Champions League final defying all the odds.

In a previous interview, Mauricio Pochettino outlined that it would be a “painful” summer for the club (Standard), with many players likely to be shown the door. Kieran Trippier was the latest to exit the club, being sold to Atletico Madrid.

The club have been given the green light to splash the cash on new additions to the squad this summer with the help of cash generated from player sales and Champions League revenue. Spurs have already broken their transfer budget this summer with the signing of Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon for £55million (Guardian).

They are also close to signing Real Betis midfielder Giovani Lo Celso who said he wants to leave Betis to play Champions League football at Tottenham. (Standard)

Bringing two top-quality players into the team this summer would mean this transfer was a success for Tottenham. The Club have had many successful transfer windows in the past, signing players for a low price that ultimately became a crucial element in the starting eleven.

With that being said, we reflect on the top five best bargains the club has made in previous transfer windows.

There’s only one Aaron Lennon – and he will always go down as a fan favourite at Tottenham Hotspur.

Aaron Lennon enjoyed a fruitful stint at White Hart Lane for a total of 10 years from 2005 to 2015. His admirable talent provided in each and every one of his years at Tottenham will always put him in the hearts of the Tottenham faithful.

Such a great player came at a very cheap price. Similar to Danny Rose, Lennon was sold by Leeds following their financial hardships. He was sold to Spurs for just £1million (BBC).

In both the 2005/06 and 2006/07 seasons, Lennon came close to picking up the PFA Young Player of the Year award but narrowly missed out to Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo. In 2008, Lennon was part of the Tottenham squad that took down Chelsea in the Carling Cup Final.

One year later, Lennon was given the honour of being Tottenham’s player of the season.
