Opinion: Eric Dier – What does he actually do and when will Jose learn

Eric Dier was taken off at half-time against Chelsea yesterday evening, around 20 minutes longer than he lasted the first time Mourinho hooked him off early.

So, why does Jose consistently start a player who has to be dragged off so often?

If you ask me, Eric Dier doesn’t offer anything to this Spurs side. He is there to shield the defence, yet does not appear to fill that role.

I rarely see him tackle. I rarely see him block. I rarely see him intercept. I rarely see him defend an attack well. He just seems to be a spare body going through the motions at a frustratingly slow pace.

When I think of a defensive midfield shield, I think of Dier when Spurs first bought him or Scott Parker in his prime. Unfortunately, Eric is absolutely miles away from this kind of level.

If Mourinho wants to stick with him, then he needs to work with Dier on the training pitch, getting his weight down and mobility up before he actually starts.

I can’t see how Winks, Ndombele, and even Skipp are behind Dier in the pecking order right now.
