Opinion: Five left-backs Spurs should consider signing this summer

The new Premier League season is almost upon us, and the summer transfer window is heading into crunch time as clubs up and down the country attempt to get their squad ready for the new campaign.

Spurs have been enjoying a busy transfer period welcoming in some strong additions as well as saying goodbye to others.

One area that Spurs need to look at improving is left-back, with not a great deal of cover for the ever-reliable Ben Davies, Mourinho should be keen on bringing in someone capable of taking his place.

Here is a list of the top five left-backs that Spurs should look to bring through the doors of Hotspur Way this summer.

Jamal Lewis

Kicking off the list is none other than Norwich’s own Jamal Lewis, a player with a huge future ahead of him.

The 22-year-old played in his debut Premier League season in 2019/20 which although ended badly for his team, was a huge success from an individual perspective.

Lewis has, despite his young age, he has made 100 senior appearances for the Canaries and could be interested in taking his career to a new level by joining a top six club (transfermarkt).

His ability to attack as well as cover in defence is something which Spurs do not currently possess, making him wise option to bring in.

Nicolas Tagliofico

Next up is experienced defender Nicolas Tagliofico, who is currently plying his trade in the Eredivisie with Ajax.

The Argentine has been linked with a move away from the Dutch club throughout this summer window, however, it seems Daniel Levy has yet to register his interest (Daily Mail).

The 28-years-old would be a great option for Spurs due to his abundance of experience not only for his national side but also in the Champions League.

Alex Sandro

Juventus ace Alex Sandro is a player that if Daniel Levy plays his cards right, could potentially swap Turin for North London.

The Brazilian international has been linked with a move to the club previously but those rumours have since calmed down. Daily Mail

Sandro would be an incredible player to add to our backline, given he has the experience and winning mentality to take us to the next level.

The 29-year-old has played a whopping 135 games in Serie A, racking up 11 goals and 19 assists in the process, making him a player that Mourinho should strongly consider (transfermarkt).

Sergio Reguilon

Next up is Real Madrid’s Sergio Reguilon, who spent the 2019/20 season on loan at fellow La Liga club Sevilla.

It has been reported that the Spaniard could be N17-bound this window if the club were to make the right offer (FootballFancast).

The 23-year-old defender would give the side a huge boost going forward thanks to his impressive record in his career so far.

Reguilon has made 45 appearances in La Liga, having scored two goals along with providing six assists (transfermarkt).

Alex Grimaldo

Finally on the list is a rumoured long-term Jose Mourinho target in the shape of former Barcelona youth player and current Benfica defender Alex Grimaldo (The Sun).

The 24-year-old has enjoyed a great career at the Portuguese giants where he has made himself a first-team regular.

Since signing in January 2016, the Spaniard has made 158 appearances for the Portuguese giants in all competitions while scoring 11 goals and delivering 30 assists (transfermarkt).

Grimaldo would add an extra dimension to Spurs’ attack and give us a wide outlet which currently does not exist down the left flank.
