Opinion: Five things we learned from Tottenham’s 3-0 FA Cup win over Preston

Tottenham Hotspur followed up on their win over Fulham with a 3-0 victory in the FA Cup against Preston North End this evening. Let’s take a look at the five things we learned:

Sonny confidence boost – People have often labelled Sonny as a confidence player, so seeing him net a brace should be exciting for Spurs fans. In his history at Tottenham, goals have often been followed by a run of goalscoring form (albeit not earlier this season with his hat-trick against Leicester). Fingers crossed this can kickstart Son’s season, and with the likes of Richarlison and Danjuma breathing down his neck, we could finally see the best of him.

Danjuma debut – Coming off the bench to score on your debut is about as good as it gets. I think it’s especially important for forwards to get off the mark quickly in England, otherwise, you get all the headlines about ‘goal droughts’ and the like. Hopefully, that will transition Danjuma well into life at Spurs and he can be full of confidence coming off the bench in the future. It’s also nice to know he is fit and ready to play a part so soon after signing.

Harry Kane rested – With the score at 0-0 and Harry Kane warming up just after half-time, it looked like yet another occasion where Spurs were going to have to call on their main man to dig them out of trouble. Fortunately, Sonny stepping up allowed Spurs to give Harry a rare rest, which is especially important with the flu he has suffered from this week. The last thing you want to do is burn out your main goal threat.

Kulusevski injury free – Kulusevski went down holding his knee against Fulham and, although he played on, was seen in pain at various points in the second half before coming off. So, it was nice to see him injury-free and fit to start the game today. No worries there.

Right-wing-back woes – Matt Doherty really struggled to get into the game today, while Emerson Royal didn’t fare much better after coming on. It seems a perfect time for Tottenham to welcome in a new and exciting young wing-back to play on the right side… Does anyone know someone who might be good?
