Opinion: Hopes and messages for each Tottenham player this season

Tottenham Hotspur top the Premier League table heading into the international break with new head coach Nuno Espirito Santo having ground out hard-fought 1-0 victories in each of his three Premier League matches so far this season.

With the dust now having settled following the closure of the summer transfer window, the focus now switches back to the players within the Spurs dressing room and the focus of breaking back into the top four.

Below, I have outlined my hopes and messages for each member of Nuno’s squad.

Hugo Lloris

To continue being a reliable shot-stopper while also continuing to improve his long-range passing. Spurs have started breaks using it this season. A 1-year contract extension would be a huge boost.

Pierluigi Gollini

To make the Conference and cup spot his, while being ready to step in if Lloris picks up an injury. It’s all about showcasing himself and getting used to his teammates this season.

Brandon Austin

Enjoy the experience of being a third choice for a big club, making some appearances on the bench. You never know, you may need to step up so take it seriously and work hard.

Japhet Tanganga

To be honest, I wanted a loan after Emerson was signed. Now I want to see Tanganga fight for that starting RB spot. It’s yours for now, so don’t let your foot off the gas! Make the most of every minute and keep improving.

Matt Doherty

You have the most experience as a right-wing-back so if the formation changes to a back 5, stamp your authority on it. No use accepting that you’re third choice, keep working hard and fight for opportunities under a manager who knows you well.

Emerson Royal

Take your time. Feel your way into the Premier League and walk before you can run. Defend first, then attack more and more as you improve your fitness. Be patient, starts in big games may not come immediately. Come and show us what you can do.

Sergio Reguilon

Your attacking game is first-class. Keep racking up assists and showing your energy. However, take the time to work hard on your positioning and defending. You have the talent to be one of the best if your game becomes more well-rounded.

Ryan Sessegnon

You need to become the rotation option for Reguilon this season, while also showing you are a left-wing option to play in a front three. You can play three positions so use that to your advantage. Be braver and more positive on the pitch.

Ben Davies

It’s time for you to be a leader as one of the most experienced heads in the team. You are the first choice at LCB and could be captain for a few Conference League games. Make the most of those chances and be ready to step up if needed.

Eric Dier

Play to your strengths. Win aerial balls, block shots, and go hard in the tackle. You have three midfielders ahead of you, so pass off quickly and positively. Leave the creating and driving to them.

Davinson Sanchez

Keep it up, basically. Talent has never been an issue but consistency has. Show us you can play like this week in week out and it could save your Spurs career.

Cristian Romero

Watch out for those yellow/red cards. Feel your way into the Premier League. Show us what you can bring to the side, solidity first and drive up the pitch second. You were bought as the man to transform the back line, back that up.

Joe Rodon

Game time may be harder to come buy under a new manager and with a new signing. You have rarely put a foot wrong, keep doing that and you will be a regular before long. Don’t force it, it will happen.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Keep doing what you are doing. Lead the midfield, keep your game well-rounded and take advantage of your ability to step out and pick passes. Also could be a great teacher for Oliver Skipp.

Oliver Skipp

Make the most of the minutes and develop your game. A full season in the PL will do you the world of good. Learn from Pierre, keep things simple and run through brick walls for the team.

Dele Alli

Make or break season. One man in that midfield three needs to be the creator. Make it you! Add goals to your game again and show you are fitter than anyone else in there. Great start to the campaign.

Giovani Lo Celso

You need to step up and be the Cristian Eriksen figure this midfield needs. You are the most naturally creative and on your day you are unplayable. Bring some more consistency and you will become one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Tanguy Ndombele

You have some making up to do. You didn’t get your move, time to forget it. This midfield three is literally made for you. Get your head down, work hard and get your fitness up to where it needs to be.

Harry Winks

You wanted to stay and fight for your place, now is the time to do it. There are three CM spots so make one of them yours. To start with, stand out and lead in the cup and Conference League games.

Bryan Gil

Things may not happen as fast as you want them to. Do not shy away from your natural ability to take people on and make things happen. Work with that and build your fitness and general game around it.

Jack Clarke

I think a full season loan would have been best. You will most likely have to do with bench appearances in cups and Europe. Showcase your hard work in training, that’s all you can do. If you impress, chances will come.

Steven Bergwijn

Time to add goals and assists to your game. Don’t change anything apart from your confidence in the final third. Once you get that, you are going to be some player!

Lucas Moura

Keep drifting inside, picking the ball up and driving Spurs down the pitch. You need to step up and chip in with double digit goals this season, and you are more than good enough to do that.

Heung-min Son

Become a leader and a match-winner in your own right. You are not Kane’s side-kick. You are on his level. Keep doing what you are doing and try to replicate your figures from last season. Nice one, Sonny!

Harry Kane

Put the transfer saga behind you. Get up to speed and do what you do best, score goals and create chances. I’m sure none of us would be upset to see a new contract too!

Dane Scarlett

There is no pressure on you. Work hard and enjoy your chances. Don’t let the nerves impact you. Just get out there and show us what you can do, the goals will come.
