While I agree that Eric Dier was right to start today in terms of rotation and getting him some minutes under his belt, I do not understand the attitude from some fans on Twitter that he is Tottenham’s saviour.
Many wanted him to come in solidify the midfield and defence, despite the fact that I don’t think he has done that in years.
Dier in his early years at Spurs was one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League, but since then he has lost all pace and quality on the ball.
His first touch today was woeful, he gave the ball away time and time again, and he was constantly left slowly chasing behind the opposition midfield as they rolled past him or caught him out of position.
He was a complete waste of space on the pitch, confirming that he is still a very average squad rotation player.
It seems as if Spurs have no one to call on at the moment to solve their problems when it comes to defence and midfield creativity.
