Opinion: Why Spurs must sign Marcus Thuram this summer

It has certainly been a frantic few weeks at Tottenham Hotspur in terms of news, however, one thing that slipped slightly under the radar was that Borussia Monchengladbach winger, Marcus Thuram, could be set to complete a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

According to RMC, Tottenham are in advanced negotiations with Borussia Monchengladbach over a move for the player. He could become the first signing for Spurs this summer and it is crucial that Levy can get a deal over the line for this incredible talent.

Here is why…

The 23-year-old has produced impressive stats over the last two seasons for Die Fohlen, notching 8 goals and 7 assists in the Bundesliga in 2020/21 (Transfermarkt). This form has earned him a place in the France squad for the European Championships this summer.

Thuram would be a ready-made replacement for Lucas Moura or Erik Lamela who could be a part of the outgoing side of the rebuild this summer.

Not only that, but with a 6’3” stature, he can play as a number 9 as well as on either wing, which could make him a great understudy to Harry Kane.

What excites me most about Thuram is his pace and power and how he uses this to be so direct – it shows his intent to create chances and score goals.

However, he is also surprisingly nimble and has very quick feet for a player so tall, which could make him something of a wildcard for Tottenham.

Perhaps the only thing that concerns me about the French international, as with any young player making the step up to the Premier League, is that he may not be able to replicate these kinds of numbers in a more competitive league.

Of course, Euro 2020 will be a perfect opportunity for the young French forward to showcase his talents and show people what he is really made of.

Hopefully, we will get a first taste of what is to come for us Spurs fans.
