Seize the opportunity

With another Champions League appearance all but assured for 2019/20 with Arsenal and Manchester United failing to take advantage of our woeful recent form in the league, tonight presents an opportunity for our club to make history by reaching our first Champions League final.

Having knocked out in previous rounds Borussia Dortmund and tournament favourites Manchester City, it is time for our team to put behind them our poor form and rise to the occasion of a possible final against Liverpool who miraculously knocked out Barcelona.

Lessons must be learnt from the first leg against Ajax where Pochettino admitted that his tactics were wrong in which a 5-3-2 formation helped Ajax dominate possession until substitute Sissoko replaced the injured Vertoghen and our formation changed to 4-4-2 which gave us more possession than before.

Our over-cautious approach to the game changed where we had more possession of the ball but little quality from either Danny Rose or Kieran Trippier on the flanks or from Eriksen and Dele Alli in midfield with Ajax’s Goalkeeper Onana hardly troubled during the 90 minutes.

With Son returning from suspension, we must start with Moura up front who both offer pace and skill which could unsettle the young Ajax team who are in pole position to reach the final having got what can be a very advantageous away goal.

There can never be a better time for Eriksen to rediscover his form against his former club which has dipped alarmingly this season. The Danish maestro is our most creative midfielder we have that can unlock defences and create chances for our forwards. His ability in having a major influence with crucial goals we have seen far too infrequently this season.

It is quite simple, tonight we have to be ruthless in front of goal as we were against Manchester City and to show that resilience in defence that will be needed if our quest for glory against Liverpool in Madrid can be a reality.
