Spurs half-time ratings vs Man Utd – One goal, one red card, and a dominant Tottenham

The half time-whistle has just blown on the first forty-five minutes of action between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

The North Londoners are looking to improve on their away record which has only seen them pick up one point in the Premier League away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium so far this season.

As expected, Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou made changes to the side which took to the field in the Europa League fixture on Thursday, with Cristian Romero among those to take his place in the team, and Heung-min Son out with injury.

Brennan Johnson came into the match looking to maintain his current goalscoring form having netted in three successive matches in all competitions, and did just that. Meanwhile Dominic Solanke has two goals in his last two outings but has been unable to add to that so far.

We have cast our eye over the displays of the Tottenham players during a dominant first half in Manchester and allocated each individual player a rating on a scale of between 1-10 after seeing Spurs head into the break 1-0 up.

Tottenham player ratings from the first half at Old Trafford

Guglielmo Vicario: Good save at the near post to deny Rashford early on. Pulled out another big stretching save to stop Zirkzee later on. Solid, safe hands, and steady distribution, too. 7.

Pedro Porro: A couple of meaningful runs forward. Hasn’t had a lot to do defensively, with Rashford looking out of it. A perfectly adequate shift so far. 6.

Cristian Romero: Calm at the back, carrying the ball nicely forward to help his team drive up the pitch. Could have had the ball in the net with a lovely acrobatic effort from a corner but sent it just wide. 7.

Micky van de Ven: If you thought his assist against Everton was good, this one today might be even better; unbelievable drive forward and vision to find Johnson. Another incredible display from the Dutchman. 9.

Destiny Udogie: Similar to Porro, Udogie has made some nice runs forward and continues to threaten down the left. Did well to stay on after appearing to be injured, and almost got a goal for his efforts. 7.

Rodrigo Bentancur: A couple of really tidy touches in the middle of the park to break up play and launch attacks for Spurs. Fairly quiet overall, though. 6.

Dejan Kulusevski: Looks really effective in the more central role. Superb one-two with Maddison should have led to a goal. Has not stopped running and putting himself about for the team to force attacking opportunities. 8.

James Maddison: Unfortunate not to have a goal after a clever move with Kulusevski. Another spritely performance in the middle of the park; he looks hungry for the ball, wants to create something every time he picks up the ball. 8.

Timo Werner: Spurned a really, really good chance one-on-one with Onana, and never looked like scoring. Has done some good work down the left, but clearly lacking in confidence and composure. 5.

Dominic Solanke: Good pressing once more. Needs to shoot quicker sometimes. Some steady hold-up play, but has to make something happen for himself soon. 6.

Brennan Johnson: Another goal for Tottenham’s golden boy; a brilliant run at the back post bringing just rewards. Could have had another with a lovely shot across goal but hit the post. 7.
