Gallery: The top five French stars who have played for Spurs

Tottenham does not necessarily have a large connection to French football. Just 13 Frenchmen have played for the club.

But with Tottenham recently capturing the signature of Tanguy Ndombele (BBC), the figure of 13 can now be increased to 14, with Ndombele being the 14th Frenchman to put on a Spurs shirt.

Spurs signed the now-former Lyon midfielder for a club record initial fee of £53.8m (BBC). The transfer became the Club’s second of the season following the announcement of Jack Clarke earlier on the same day.

Spurs had waited over 500 days for any transfer activity, and they finally got two in one day.

With the announcement of Ndombele joining Spurs, we list our top 5 best French players to play for the club, with the exception of Ndombele who obviously is yet to play a game.

As is the case for many on this list – Steed Malbranque was regarded as a cult hero and a favourite with the fans during his tenure at White Hart Lane. It seems as if most Frenchmen who play for the Lilywhites instantly become favourites, and Malbranque is no different.

At the conclusion of the 2005/06 season, Malbranque was placed on the transfer list by Fulham who failed to reach new contract terms with the French midfielder.

The following season he found himself on the other side of London, where he would go on to appear 62 times.

Malbranque is one of the last Spurs players to win a trophy, being part of the squad that took down Chelsea in the 2008 League Cup.

However, this would be one of his final appearances for the club after he departed for Sunderland just a few months later in July.

Malbranque is remembered for his unrelenting work rate and commitment.
