Tottenham Hotspur Groundhog Day: What Spurs need to do to escape their cycle of misery

If there is one metaphor that describes the reality of being a Tottenham Hotspur fan for the last few years it’s probably the 90s classic Groundhog Day. But instead of Bill Murray stuck in a time loop, it’s a fanbase of millions forced to watch a club in a cycle of structural mismanagement and perpetual failure.

After last weekend’s performance against Sunderland, we’ve been left wondering just how many ways are there left to describe how awful Tottenham Hotspur have been this season.

Their two-all draw at home to Brighton does change the narrative ever so slightly but is yet unclear how exactly.

It remains to be seen whether it will be remembered as the first bit of fight and genuine competitiveness that Spurs showed in their push onto eventual league safety; or whether Spurs’ inability to hold on to their lead will have precipitated their downfall and demotion…

But what we now know is that Spurs’ game against Brighton has probably been their most spirited performance this calendar year, if not the entire season altogether.

For their troubles Tottenham have been awarded a point (although all three were up for grabs) but they are still languishing in the relegation zone, just a point behind West Ham in 17^th, their closest relegation rival.

Spurs’ result against Brighton marks a repeat of a scenario we’ve seen on repeat this season. They fail to win another must win game, they cross a line in the sand, a new one is drawn and the stakes get higher.

First, it was a loss to West Ham at home back in January, when 10 points still separated the two teams and the Hammers looked nailed on for relegation. A loss away at Fulham, then at home to Crystal Palace. Then, the entirety of Tottenham rallied in a truly unprecedented way to show support before their fixture against Nottingham Forest. That too proved feckless as Spurs lost by three goals to nil.

Now Spurs take their plight to the Molineux to try and avoid the most embarrassing relegation in Premier League history.

The verdict, of course, has not yet fallen. But the tightrope to safety grows ever thinner and more precarious, as Nottingham Forest’s win over Burnley extended their gap to the drop zone to 5 points, and a West Ham win would give Spurs no space to breathe at all.

But, aside from relegation, what Tottenham Hotspur are really up against is poor leadership and a lack of a coherent footballing strategy. And unless one is implemented, they will continue to spiral downwards.

How did Tottenham get here?

For years the managerial appointments swung from one tactical extreme to another. The resulting squad is one which doesn’t fit any manager or playing style.

Fans were led to believe that the appointment of Ange Postecoglou in 2023 was the beginning of a new and holistic footballing strategy where no one manager was bigger than the project.

But the departure from a coherent strategy couldn’t have been more stark when defensively minded Thomas Frank was appointed as the successor to the ultra-attacking Postecoglou.

The club’s insistence that, according to their hiring criteria, Thomas Frank was an attacking coach (as per CEO Vinai Venkatesham), could only suggest that their hiring criteria were poorly developed. Their reticence to sack the Dane despite showing no tactical development across his spell in charge could only suggest a lack of clear internal footballing expectations placed on the manager.

While on the surface, the appointment of Roberto De Zerbi is a step in the right direction, reports that he arrives at Spurs in an “Alex Ferguson role,” with extensive influence over transfer policy, suggest that Spurs remain directionless, depending on one man to dictate the vision for the entire club.

What’s next for Spurs?

The real solution lies in building a boardroom structure that is balanced, collaborative, and resilient— providing a vision greater than the ideas of any one person and one that can maintain continuity for that vision even as those in charge change.

Wolves away is yet another game in a series of must-wins. De Zerbi put his trust in the players, proclaiming that the team is capable of winning five games in a row. It’s hard to see what gives him the confidence. But it doesn’t matter how Tottenham avoid relegation. It only matters what they do after.
