Tottenham take a first-time trip to Everton’s new home, the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday, hoping to secure their first win since the international break.
Tottenham are the only team this season whose fans actually feel more comfortable with an away fixture than a home one. Their home form has been dreadful, the fourth worst in the league, while away from home, they’ve been the best in the division.
It’s been a tough few weeks for the north London side since the international break. They lost 2-1 at home to Aston Villa before playing out their first goalless draw in 125 games, coming against Monaco in the Champions League on Wednesday.
While the scoreline might’ve looked even, the Ligue 1 side dominated for large parts and, if not for Guglielmo Vicario’s heroics, Thomas Frank might’ve had a few more uncomfortable questions to answer.
Despite just 2 wins in their last five league matches, Frank’s men still sit 6th in a tight top half of the Premier League table.
Everton, meanwhile, have made their new home something of a fortress. They are yet to lose at the Hill Dickinson Stadium and seem to love hosting teams there.
That said, consistency has been their issue. One week they’re on a three-match winning streak, the next they can’t buy a win in four. After handing Crystal Palace their first defeat of the season right after the break, they slipped to a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City last time out, leaving them 12th in the table.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur: Head-to-head record
The last meeting between these two ended in a dramatic 3-2 win for the Toffees. Everton raced to a 3-0 lead at half-time before Spurs pulled two back, but it was too little, too late. Earlier that season though, Spurs had thrashed them 4-0 in the reverse fixture.
Moreover, Everton last won consecutive league games against Spurs back in December 2012, during David Moyes’ first stint at the club.
Tottenham’s overall record at Goodison (and now Hill Dickinson) is pretty solid. They’ve only lost one of their last 12 Premier League away games against Everton (W3 D8). However, they haven’t tasted victory in their previous six visits (5D 1L), so this one could go either way.
Tottenham team news
Thomas Frank provided an update on several key names. Dominic Solanke and Cristian Romero are both back on the grass but remain unavailable.
Destiny Udogie, meanwhile, has not yet returned to training and is still recovering. All three are ruled out with no clear timeframe, though Frank expects Romero’s and Udogie’s issues to be short-term.
Ben Davies, Radu Dragusin, Dejan Kulusevski, Yves Bissouma and James Maddison all remain sidelined until at least the end of next month
Everton team news
Jack Grealish, ineligible to face his parent club Manchester City last week, is available to start this time around.
David Moyes only has two fitness concerns. Nathan Patterson is close to a return but unlikely to feature, while Jarrad Branthwaite is ruled out with a hamstring injury.
Predicted Tottenham line-up
Vicario, Porro, Danso, Van de Ven, Spence, Palhinha, Simons, Sarr, Kudus, Kolo Muani, Odobert.
Despite Archie Gray impressing against Monaco, Djed Spence is expected to return to his regular spot, with Gray potentially getting minutes off the bench or even a start in midfield.
There’s been plenty of confusion among fans about why Pape Sarr was suddenly dropped despite his strong start to the season. Frank’s claim that “other players have done better” hasn’t gone down well with supporters, and many expect Sarr to return to the starting XI alongside Palhinha and Simons.
Up front, Mathys Tel or Richarlison could replace Kolo Muani, while Brennan Johnson might come in for Odobert on the left.
Our prediction
Thomas Frank raised eyebrows this week when he claimed Tottenham have only had one bad performance all season: the 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth in August.
Most fans would disagree, pointing out several matches that were a hard watch. The big concern isn’t actually the poor displays, but rather Frank’s reluctance to acknowledge them.
Right now, Spurs are crying out for creativity as the absences of James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski have left a massive void in the middle of the pitch. Xavi Simons needs to start influencing games more, and Pape Sarr will be desperate to prove his manager wrong.
Everton, on the other hand, won’t make it easy. With Jack Grealish ranking second in the league for chances created (17) and sitting joint-top for assists alongside Mohammed Kudus, they’ve got the tools to punish any lack of defensive stability from Tottenham.
Still, Spurs know recent performances haven’t been up to scratch, and the players will be desperate to respond. Given their away form and the extra motivation to get back on track, we’re backing them to find a way through.
Predicted score: Everton 0-2 Tottenham Hotspur
