Tottenham Hotspur travel to St James’ Park for a second time this season, as they prepare to face Newcastle United midweek in the Premier League.
Once stable in the top four, Tottenham Hotspur now find themselves languishing 12th in the Premier League standings after four defeats from their last five. Pressure is piling on Thomas Frank, with the mood around the club turning increasingly sour.
Their home form has made his case even weaker as Spurs haven’t won at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since the opening week, picking up 2 draws and 4 defeats since.
The latest was a 2-1 loss to Fulham at the weekend, where returning home after three weeks didn’t help at all. Mohammed Kudus pulled one back in the second half, but the damage was done inside the opening five minutes, and the players were booed off at full-time.
Newcastle sit one place below Spurs but are level on points, also struggling for any real consistency. Back-to-back defeats to West Ham and Brentford were responded to by beating Manchester City and then putting four past Everton, most recently in a 1-4 win.

Newcastle vs Tottenham Hotspur: Head-to-head record
Last season’s Carabao Cup semi-finalists Tottenham already met Newcastle, who went on to win the competition, in the cup a month ago, when Newcastle knocked Spurs out with a comfortable 2-1 home win.
That said, Newcastle have dominated this fixture, winning five of their last six meetings. It’s been a rough match-up for Tottenham, who haven’t beaten them since December 2023, and St James’ Park has rarely been kind to them in recent seasons.
Tottenham team news
There are no fresh changes from the weekend, though captain Cristian Romero is back after serving a one-match suspension for yellow card accumulation.
Radu Dragusin has rejoined full training and could return to the matchday squad, although he isn’t expected to play.
That said, Thomas Frank hasn’t offered any timeline for the returns of Dejan Kulusevski or Dominic Solanke, though we believe both will only be back towards the end of the month at best. James Maddison, Yves Bissouma and Kota Takai all remain sidelined.
Newcastle team news
Nick Pope suffered a knock last week, so Aaron Ramsdale will start in goal.
Kieran Trippier, Sven Botman, Emil Krafth, William Osula and Yoane Wissa are all unavailable, although Wissa is close to returning.
Predicted Tottenham line-up
Vicario, Spence, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie, Bergvall, Bentancur, Simons, Kudus, Kolo Muani, Odobert
Our prediction
Praised early in the season for building a defensively solid side, Frank has watched his team leak 11 goals in the space of a week. Normally, you’d expect that kind of collapse to at least come with some attacking spark, but Spurs aren’t creating anything either.
Frustration has spilt over, and supporters have turned sharply on the manager. His recent comments – like pointing out that Tottenham finished 17th last season or saying fans who booed the players during the game weren’t “true Tottenham fans” – have only added fuel to the fire.
It’s genuinely hard to see where the turnaround comes from, but grabbing a win at St James’ Park would be a decent place to start.
Keep an eye on Xavi Simons. Fans were surprised that he didn’t start any of the last three matches, and he was one of the few bright sparks when Spurs faced Newcastle in the Carabao Cup.
For Newcastle, Malick Thiaw is the danger man. He was excellent defensively at the weekend and helped himself to a brace as well.
Predicted score: Newcastle 1-2 Tottenham
