Tottenham Hotspur vs Brentford, Premier League preview, team news, and head-to-head record

Thomas Frank welcomes his former employers Brentford to north London on Saturday as Tottenham Hotspur look to finally put an end to their month-long winless run.

Winless in the league for more than a month now, Tottenham have had to deal with a brutal run of fixtures, and their midweek visit to St James’ Park eased some of that frustration as they were held back late in a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United.

Cristian Romero delivered a brace, but a controversial VAR penalty decision denied them what would have been a priceless away win. Still, a point at a ground where they’ve struggled to take anything in recent years offers at least a small platform to build on, even if that solitary point is only their second in the last 5 league outings.

This underwhelming run has dragged Spurs down to 11th with 19 points, which is fewer than Ange Postecoglou had at this stage last season before that side went on to finish one place above the relegation zone.

Appointed as Brentford’s new head coach this season, Keith Andrews now has the chance to move ahead of his old boss, with his team currently level on points with Spurs at 13th, separated only by goal difference.

The Bees have alternated between wins and losses with some consistency, and although they were beaten 2-0 by league leaders Arsenal in midweek, they still managed to create five times the xG Tottenham produced against their North London rivals.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Brentford: Head-to-head record

Thomas Frank’s Brentford were one of only 3 teams Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham managed to do the double over last season, with Spurs winning the first meeting 3-1 before taking the reverse fixture 0-2.

The last time Brentford beat Tottenham was back in the 2022/23 campaign, when Frank’s men defeated Ryan Mason’s interim side 1-3 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but that remains their only victory over Spurs since their promotion to the Premier League in 2021.

Tottenham team news

There are no fresh injury issues following the Newcastle match, meaning the list remains unchanged. Ben Davies, Yves Bissouma, James Maddison, Kota Takai, Dominic Solanke, and Dejan Kulusevski are all sidelined, although the latter 3 are likely to return before the end of the year.

Takai played his first minutes in a Tottenham shirt with the under-21s in midweek, alongside Radu Dragușin, who may make the matchday squad at best but is unlikely to be risked from the start.

Meanwhile, Micky van de Ven and Richarlison, both rested against Newcastle to manage their minutes, are expected to return to the starting XI.

Brentford team news

Brentford’s only confirmed absentee is Fabio Carvalho, with the Portuguese midfielder ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Predicted Tottenham line-up

Vicario; Spence, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Palhinha, Simons, Gray; Kudus, Kolo Muani, Johnson

Our prediction

Brentford have already pulled off a few surprises this season, taking notable wins against Liverpool, Manchester United and Newcastle, so Tottenham cannot afford to underestimate them.

Igor Thiago is enjoying an excellent campaign with 11 league goals, sitting second only to Erling Haaland, and although Spurs have not typically struggled against forwards of his profile, the real danger lies in cutting off his service, which often comes from Jordan Henderson and Kevin Schade.

For Tottenham, Xavi Simons is the one to watch. Frank’s decision to rest him for a fourth straight match did not sit well with supporters, especially as Spurs’ creativity has dried up from game to game, so this feels like the moment where he returns to the starting XI and reminds everyone of his value.

The pressure on Thomas Frank eased slightly after the Newcastle draw, but it certainly hasn’t vanished, and losing to his former assistant would only turn the volume back up.

Spurs should have enough to edge this if they play with the required intensity and bring back some of the attacking sharpness that has been missing in recent weeks.

Predicted score: Tottenham 2-0 Brentford
