Tottenham Hotspur vs Wolves, Premier League preview, team news, and head-to-head record

Third-placed Tottenham Hotspur host a winless Wolves side in the sixth week of the Premier League on Saturday.

Tottenham’s excellent start to life under Thomas Frank has extended into the domestic cups too, as they beat Doncaster Rovers 3-0 in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

That makes it five wins from seven under the Dane, all with clean sheets, alongside just one defeat and a dramatic draw at Brighton, where Spurs came back from two goals down to claim a point last week. That result has kept them 3rd in Premier League standings, level with Arsenal on 10 points but a goal worse off on difference.

Meanwhile, it has been a very different story for Wolves. Vitor Pereira’s side are rooted to the bottom with zero points from five games. Their only wins this season came in the Carabao Cup, most recently knocking Everton out in midweek.

However, in the league, it has been painful viewing. Last time out, they let slip a 1-0 lead and conceded three in the space of 15 minutes to newly promoted Leeds United. In fact, their last Premier League victory came back in April, and they have been sliding ever since.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Wolves head-to-head record

Recent history has not been kind to Spurs in this fixture. Tottenham have lost four of their last five league meetings with Wolves, conceding at least twice in each of the last four. You have to go back to August 2022 for their last win in this matchup.

The home record is hardly inspiring either. Wolves have only lost two of their last eight Premier League visits to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, taking four wins and two draws.

Still, last season Spurs managed to avoid handing Wolves their usual double, holding them to a 2-2 draw in the first meeting before being well beaten 4-2 at Molineux earlier this year.

Tottenham team news

There are no changes to Tottenham’s long-term injury list with James Maddison, Radu Dragusin and Dejan Kulusevski still unavailable. Kota Takai is also sidelined with a foot injury and there is no clear return date.

Pape Sarr missed both of Spurs’ most recent games due to a minor thigh discomfort, but Frank has confirmed he is fit and ready to feature again.

As for Dominic Solanke, Randal Kolo Muani, Ben Davies and Yves Bissouma, all remain doubts with more clarity expected in the manager’s press conference on Friday.

Wolves team news

Wolves’ victory over Everton in midweek came at a cost, with midfielder Andre forced off late on with a calf problem. He is a major doubt for Saturday and his absence would be a huge blow for Pereira.

Beyond that, Wolves are still without long-term casualties Leon Chiwome and Enso Gonzalez, both recovering from knee issues. Pereira will be crossing his fingers that Andre’s knock does not add another name to an already stretched list.

Predicted Tottenham line-up

Vicario; Spence, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Bergvall, Simons, Palhinha; Kudus, Richarlison, Johnson

Pedro Porro was the only defender from Spurs’ regular league backline who started in the Carabao Cup, which suggests Frank will give him a rest here.

The midfield selection is the trickiest call. Archie Gray impressed against Doncaster, while Rodrigo Bentancur has started three consecutive games without doing much wrong. However, Joao Palhinha‘s performances have been very influential lately, and Bergvall is in the best form of his Spurs career so far. Frank may keep Gray and Sarr on the bench, with Sarr likely eased back in after his injury.

In attack, there is very little room for change. Xavi Simons is at his most effective in the number 10 role, so Brennan Johnson should keep his place out wide after an excellent display in midweek. Richarlison, meanwhile, is almost nailed on to start, given his record against Wolves.

Our prediction

Dr Tottenham has not been on duty since Thomas Frank took charge and Spurs fans will hope the doctor stays off work again this weekend, despite all the omens around this fixture.

Richarlison will be the apple for the doctor if he does appear. The Brazilian has six goals in 12 Premier League games against Wolves, his joint-best return against any opponent alongside Leicester.

No Wolves player has looked particularly threatening so far, but as Spurs supporters know too well, there is no guarantee that one player will suddenly discover his prime form against them.

Still, Tottenham are unbeaten in their last 15 league matches against teams starting the day bottom of the table. That trend, combined with Wolves’ lack of confidence, should see Frank’s men take another three points along with a clean sheet.

Predicted score: Tottenham 3-0 Wolves
