Alan Hutton names managerial appointment that will delight Tottenham fans

As the speculation continues to run rife over Ange Postecoglou’s potential replacement, Alan Hutton has told Daniel Levy that there is one managerial appointment that he can make this summer that will immediately get the Tottenham fans on his side.

It is unclear if even winning the Europa League will be enough to save Postecoglou’s job on the back of what has been a disastrous Premier League campaign for Tottenham.

Names such as Andoni Iraola, Thomas Frank and Marco Silva have been the most heavily linked with the Spurs job, but there is one transfer rumour that has understandably piqued the interest of Tottenham fans.

Various outlets have continued to insist over recent weeks that Mauricio Pochettino remains firmly in contention for the Spurs job, even though he is contracted with the US Men’s national team until next year’s World Cup.

Alan Hutton urges Tottenham to bring Mauricio Pochettino back

Hutton insisted that Tottenham are still paying for their mistake of not backing Pochettino in a big way back in 2019.

The former Spurs right-back opined that the Argentine has shown that he can build good sides in the Premier League and suggested that his appointment would turn around the mood of the fan base.

Hutton told Boyle Sports: “After the Champions League final, there was an opportunity for Tottenham to really go and kick on. If they were to bring in some players to help that squad that they already had, they could really go and challenge for a number of years. It didn’t quite happen.

“But I thought overall what Poch did was decent. He’d done a really good job. They were unlucky in the league as well. So for him to come back, I think the fans would be happy. Of course, he can’t please everybody.

“But he knows the club, he knows the expectations there and he can build good teams. So he probably feels he’s got a little bit of unfinished business.

“However, I think he’s probably happy at this moment in time, the USA manager and he’s got the World Cup next summer. So it might be difficult to get him out of that. But I think that would be a decent choice for Tottenham.”

Spurs would have to break the bank to bring back Pochettino

The former Tottenham manager took over as the head coach of the US Men’s National Team back in September of last year and he has been tasked with leading the country into their home World Cup next year.

It has been reported over recent weeks that Pochettino is protected by a release clause of $25m (£19.3m). That means that Daniel Levy will have to spend handsomely if he wants to bring the 53-year-old through the door before the summer of 2026.

However, one thing that the Lilywhites might be encouraged by is the fact that Pochettino admitted back in March that he still has unfinished business at Tottenham.
