Alasdair Gold reveals Tottenham have ‘high hopes’ for winger

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur have plenty of faith in Steven Bergwijn and have ‘high hopes’ about his prospects for the future.

Bergwijn is one of many Spurs stars who likely would have feared for his place in the side when Tottenham acquired the services of Gareth Bale in the summer.

However, apart from Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, the Dutchman has been the most used attacker so far this season, seemingly moving ahead of the likes of Bale, Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela in the pecking order.

The 23-year-old came back into the starting line up against Sheffield United on Sunday after returning from an injury lay off and his impact was immediately apparent as the Spurs frontline was much more fluid in attack.

Bergwijn has come under criticism from sections of the Tottenham fan base for not getting enough goals but Gold has now revealed that those at the club are convinced that the former PSV Eindhoven man will start finding the back of the net.

The journalist claims that Bergwijn is held in high esteem by the Spurs coaching staff because of his all-round contribution.

What Bergwijn has that the likes of Lucas and Bale (for now) do not seem to is his ability to hold the ball up and wait for attacking reinforcement. The Dutchman is not just quick and a good dribbler but his first touch is often right on the money and he also possesses the strength to go up against strong defenders. These attributes when combined with his work ethic and his smart running off the ball makes him an important cog in the wheel.
