‘Already exploded’ – Foyth reveals what Dier told him about Spurs team-mate

Juan Foyth has claimed that Giovani Lo Celso has already proven how important a player he can be to Tottenham following his first full season at the club.

Lo Celso found himself struggling for game time in his first few months at Spurs after arriving from Real Betis in the summer of 2019.

However, the Argentine finished the season as one of the first names on the teamsheet, with Jose Mourinho even admitting last season that he would not swap the 24-year-old for any other player.

Spurs fans would have been hoping that the midfielder would have been able to build on his impressive debut campaign but injury problems have prevented the former Paris Saint-Germain man from getting a consistent run of matches in the side this season.

Lo Celso has started the last two Premier League matches against Aston Villa and Newcastle and Mourinho has backed the midfielder to get back to his previous levels over the course of the next few weeks.

Foyth, who is currently on loan at Villereal, certainly has no doubts about the midfielder’s quality, with the defender revealing that his compatriot is thought of very highly by his Tottenham team-mates.

Foyth told 90 min regarding Lo Celso: “For me, he [Lo Celso] already exploded last year.

“When Mourinho arrived he did not start playing, but after it was impossible to take him out because he was the engine of the team, the one who ran the most, the one who asked for the ball the most.

“I remember a game we were talking to Eric Dier on the bench and he told me, ‘I can’t believe he [Lo Celso] doesn’t play for Real Madrid or Barcelona’.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Some Spurs fans have been suggesting recently that Lo Celso is overrated and questioning if the club should cash in on him. I believe that is incredibly harsh on the midfielder, who has been unlucky to be plagued by so many injuries. Getting rid of Lo Celso would be a major mistake as he has not reached his true potential in a Spurs shirt yet.
