Charlie Austin predicts mediocre Tottenham finish despite £237m spending spree

Former Southampton forward Charlie Austin has now shared his thoughts on where he expects Tottenham to finish in the Premier League next season under Roberto De Zerbi.

There is no denying that Tottenham Hotspur must improve on their display in the Premier League this season after consecutive 17th-place finishes in the previous two campaigns.

Spurs have gone to work this summer transfer window, splashing the cash and spending £237 million on new recruits.

Tottenham have already broken their record transfer fee twice this summer and are still not through in the transfer market, with further forward signings expected.

With such a busy transfer window, the pressure for Tottenham to enjoy a much-improved campaign remains high.

There have been a few former Spurs legends, including Harry Redknapp, who have tipped the Lilywhites to secure a top-six finish.

Now, former Southampton forward Charlie Austin has also given his prediction for Tottenham’s league campaign next season.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Austin was asked where he believes Spurs should realistically be aiming to finish under Roberto De Zerbi.

While acknowledging that improvement is expected after the club’s recent struggles, he also outlined the level he believes Tottenham should be targeting without getting carried away by expectations.

He said: “16th and above. But in all seriousness, top half… Top half trying to get into the European places. Europa League, Conference League etc. There’s got to be improvement that has happened over the last two seasons.”

Austin explains why Spurs must keep expectations in check

Certainly, De Zerbi will be hoping for a European finish, but that in itself will not come easy, with several other sides in the Premier League also expected to be highly competitive.

Austin expanded on his comments by explaining why he believes expectations should remain measured despite Tottenham’s significant spending this summer.

The former striker warned that investment alone does not guarantee progress, pointing to the strength of the competition throughout the division.

Asked whether De Zerbi had come in simply to finish in the top 10, he continued: “But just try and get into the European places.”

Quizzed about the money spent this summer, he added: “Yeah, it is fine but you can’t disrespect the other teams, they going to take your place in the top ten?”
