Despite Tottenham’s poor start to the Premier League season, where they remain winless, Mateus Fernandes remains adamant that a victory will come.
After a run of three games without a win in the Premier League so far this season, Tottenham Hotspur find themselves in 18th place.
It is far from the start Roberto De Zerbi would have envisioned his side making, but that is the reality for Spurs despite their £394 million transfer outlay.
Their disastrous start to life in the Premier League has also brought about criticism from pundits, as Troy Deeney tore into De Zerbi following the Lilywhites’ draw last time out against Nottingham Forest.
He said: “This whole ‘we have only been working together since Thursday’, not true is it? Because you were in the back end of last year, so you have had all of pre-season, you have added pieces along the way, you have had Tonali who did not even go to the World Cup, what is his excuse for him still playing bad? It is already excuse-laden; I think that is what Spurs do, they make excuses.”
Tottenham prepare for Everton test as Mateus Fernandes stays calm
Up next for Tottenham is a home clash against Everton, whom the Lilywhites beat on the final day of last season to secure their Premier League status.
However, this campaign, the Toffees are not in the same boat as Spurs, as David Moyes’ men have managed a strong start to the season and are yet to taste defeat.
Everton did not spend as much as Tottenham did in the transfer market, but still Moyes has managed to get more from his team than De Zerbi.
Tottenham’s newest signing Mateus Fernandes, however, is not overly concerned about Spurs’ poor start, as he remains confident that the Lilywhites will begin to pick up wins.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “I know what it is like: when you win, you are the best. When you lose, you are the worst.
“We just focus on us. If you believe in the club, if you believe in the manager, you know that you need to take some time to learn the timings, everything tactical, and when you arrive there, it is like ketchup. It starts spilling.”
Fernandes focused on winning despite Spurs’ early struggles
Fernandes has not had the best of luck in terms of relegation scraps, with the Portuguese suffering relegation in his last two seasons with Southampton and West Ham.
However, with Tottenham, the midfielder’s focus is on winning despite the Lilywhites finding themselves in 18th place after three games.
He added: “This is one of the reasons that I came here, to play for winning something. We want to win the games, we want to fight for the titles and, with this squad, it is normal that we want to fight for the titles.”
Fernandes has certainly shown flashes of his brilliance this season, but he has only managed just the one start in the Premier League.
He showed his quality in the game against Brentford, where he was deployed as a number ten, and the hope is that he’ll start more regularly as Spurs look to kick‑start their season with a win.
