Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero has informed the club of his preferred outcome this summer following months of speculation surrounding his future.
Tottenham Hotspur have already strengthened their defence this summer with the arrivals of Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke after Roberto De Zerbi admitted that a rebuild was needed following last season’s struggles.
Those additions appeared to point towards an eventual departure for club captain Cristian Romero, who endured a difficult campaign both on and off the pitch. The Argentine was often portrayed as a frustrated figure behind the scenes and also missed seven matches through suspension during the season.
Despite signing a contract extension until 2029 only last summer, speculation over Romero’s future has continued. Clubs in Spain were credited with interest earlier in the year, while Manchester United have also been linked in recent months, although reports have suggested no formal approach has arrived.
Now, a fresh update has emerged regarding the defender’s future.

Cristian Romero reportedly wants to stay at Tottenham
According to SportsBoom, Romero has informed Tottenham that he wants to remain in North London and be part of the club’s rebuild under De Zerbi.
The report states that the World Cup winner believes he still has unfinished business at Spurs despite a frustrating season and sees himself as an important figure in helping the club move forward.
Manchester United, Brentford and Crystal Palace are all said to be monitoring the centre-back’s situation, but Romero‘s preference is reportedly to stay rather than pursue a move elsewhere.
SportsBoom add that the defender’s stance is tied to the direction of the project. Romero is understood to want reassurance over Tottenham’s recruitment plans and long-term ambitions before fully committing himself to the next phase of the rebuild.
After months of uncertainty surrounding his future, the latest indication is that Romero wants to remain at Spurs and help lead the club back towards the top end of the Premier League.
Cristian Romero set to miss Argentina’s final group game
There may, however, be a short wait before Romero returns to action again at international level.
The defender appeared to suffer discomfort in his knee during Argentina’s World Cup victory over Austria after taking a knock in the second half. While the issue is not believed to be serious, Argentina are expected to manage his workload carefully.
With qualification for the knockout stages already secured, Lionel Scaloni has the luxury of rotating his squad and resting key players ahead of the latter stages of the tournament.
Scaloni informed post-match that the Tottenham captain “will not play vs Jordan”, although the injury is not expected to affect his involvement beyond that match.
