Daniel Levy’s flawed squad building exposed as Timo Werner out-earns Tottenham star 11 to 1

Timo Werner earns 11 times more than one of Tottenham Hotspur’s best players this season — and it sums up everything wrong with how the club is being run under Daniel Levy.

Tottenham Hotspur’s chairman Daniel Levy is no stranger to criticism. In fact, this season alone, the Spurs chairman has come under fire more often than not, with fans urging him to step aside and walk away from the club altogether.

On Sunday before the clash against Southampton, Spurs fans were once again out in numbers protesting against Levy and ENIC — and the anger didn’t stop outside.

Even after Tottenham Hotspur scored their second of the day, chants calling for the 63-year-old to leave rang out from inside the ground.

Timo Werner’s wage at Tottenham Hotspur highlights Daniel Levy’s failed strategy

Many fans believe that Daniel Levy’s lack of on-pitch ambition is severely hampering Tottenham Hotspur’s progress.

In recent weeks, Spurs‘ accounting report for the 2023/24 season was released — and it made for telling reading. Yes, Tottenham recorded another loss, their third in a row, but the figure was significantly lower than the previous year.

That’s largely down to one thing: the wage bill. Harry Kane’s departure, coupled with the club offloading and loaning out several unwanted players, has played a key role in driving the figures down.

However, a deeper look reveals exactly what Spurs fans have long suspected — that the squad building remains fundamentally flawed.

A wage comparison between one of Tottenham’s standout performers this season and one of their most underwhelming shows just how skewed things are.

According to Spotrac, Lucas Bergvall earns £15,000 per week. That’s 11 times less than RB Leipzig loanee Timo Werner, who’s reportedly pocketing a Tottenham wage of £165,000 a week — despite starting far fewer games.

It’s a damning indictment of how little priority Levy and his team seem to place on actually building a competitive squad.

Let’s not forget, this is Werner’s second loan spell at the club — and judging by his first, any side with real ambition wouldn’t have touched him again. But with no transfer fee involved, Levy saw the cheap option and went for it.

Spurs’ lack of ambition in the market continues to hurt

Sure, having high earners doesn’t automatically bring trophies, but signing the best players usually does. And that’s exactly where Spurs keep falling short. They simply don’t bring in enough top-quality talent to seriously compete.

To make matters worse, Levy has already hinted that if Tottenham miss out on Champions League football, fans shouldn’t expect the club to put itself at financial risk. In other words, there won’t be any major spending spree this summer.

It’s a gut punch for Spurs fans. However, financial expert Kieran Maguire has exclusively told Spurs Web that he reckons Tottenham could pocket around £60 million if they go deep in the Europa League.

The hope is that, should they qualify for the Champions League via that route, the club finally shows some proper ambition — and stops trying to cut corners with short-term fixes that only set them back further on the pitch.
