Fabrizio Romano provides an update on Sergio Ramos’ future amid rumoured Spurs’ interest

Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has explained that Sergio Ramos is keen to sign a two-year extension with Real Madrid but revealed that the Spanish giants are waiting to see if they can offer him a new contract due to their complicated economic situation.

90min.com reported in November that Tottenham had reached out to Ramos, whose current contract expires at the end of the season, over a potential move to North London.

The Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick also claimed a couple of days ago that the legendary defender is on Tottenham’s radar ahead of the January transfer window.

Some Spurs fans on social media have refused to believe that the Lilywhites have a legitimate chance of snapping up the 34-year-old.

Romano has now explained the centre-back’s situation in detail, suggesting that only time will tell if Los Blancos will be able to offer the defender a new deal.

The journalist did hint that a move away from the club is on the cards for the World Cup winner if a contract is not forthcoming soon.

When asked about Ramos’ future, Romano said on the Que Golazo Podcast: “We have to say that Sergio Ramos loves Real Madrid and when you think about Sergio Ramos you can’t see Sergio Ramos to another club that is not Real Madrid, and that’s why he’s been so respectful, I have to say.

“Because, Real Madrid have been in a complicated economic situation, they can’t sign any players, they have asked players with expiring contracts, like Sergio Ramos and like Luka Modric, let’s wait a bit, we have to understand the situation and then we will make a bid for your contract.

“So, we need to wait. That’s what Real Madrid say to Sergio Ramos, and when you have these kind of legends of European football, not just Real Madrid, they can also say, I don’t want to wait I’m going to negotiate with another club and take a bigger contract with another club in the Premier League or with PSG and much more.

“Sergio Ramos has been so respectful, he has waited, and he wants to be the captain of the new Bernabeu with Real Madrid, but he needs to have a contract bid, and at the moment, Real Madrid are still waiting. He wants to receive a two year contract, he wants the same money and not to change anything on his contract, so the same contract for the next two years.

“It’s up to Real Madrid, and that’s why everything can happen with Sergio Ramos, it’s up to Florentino Perez.”

Ramos is still a very important player for Zinedine Zidane’s side and I cannot forsee a situation where Real Madrid do not offer him a new deal. Like Modric, I expect the centre-back to sign a contract sooner rather than later.
