“I heard that there was interest from Tottenham” – Defender opens up on transfer talk

Lille right-back Zeki Celik, who was rumoured to be on Tottenham Hotspur’s radar during the summer transfer window has admitted that he did hear of the North Londoners’ interest.

Tottenham were heavily linked with a move for Celik during the summer (Le10Sport) with Jose Mourinho looking to add a right-back to his squad, with Lille president Gerard Lopez admitting back in September that the club had received offers for the Turkish defender (France Bleu).

The North Londoners eventually turned their attention to Wolves’ Matt Doherty, which was seen as a real coup at the time.

The Republic of Ireland international had a mixed start to his Spurs career but is now showing signs that he has settled in and has provided stiff competition for Serge Aurier as first-choice.

Celik admitted that he is attracted by the prospect of a move to English football but insisted that he is pleased to have stayed at the Stade Pierre Mauroy.

The 23-year-old said in an interview to So Foot (as relayed by GFFN): “I heard that there was interest from Tottenham, but I don’t know if they made an offer.

“In any case, I know that the Premier League is a league that I am attracted to, but I am happy to have stayed here when you look at the start to the season that we have had.”
