A worrying trend at Tottenham Hotspur

During the last few years even when Mauricio Pochettino was in charge of Spurs, there have been feelings of discontent within the Tottenham Hotspur fanbase on how the club is being run.

A lack of investment in the squad has been one of the major concerns of the fans and this season those concerns became a reality as an injury crisis left the Lilywhites squad stretched to its absolute limit.

While managers often fall by the sword when results falter, this time around, Tottenham Hotspur fans have thrown their frustrations at the club’s hierarchy. Chants, banners and protests, all signal that they have had enough of Daniel Levy and co.

Jermain Defoe shows sympathy for under-pressure Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy

Before the clash against Manchester United, Tottenham fans came out in their thousands to send a clear message to club chairman Daniel Levy. “Get out of our club, Daniel Levy, get out of our club,” they chanted as they marched before the game and during a sit-in after the game.

Following the protest against the chairman, former Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe, has now shown sympathy toward Daniel Levy. The Englishman stated that the chairman would be hurt by what he has witnessed, especially after all he has given.

He said on Skysports: “He will probably be thinking, well, I have given you everything. You know, I have tried to get the top managers—the Mourinhos, the Contes, winners—to try to get over the line.

“Under Poch, they came close, you know, the Champions League final, so I can imagine… I mean, he’ll be hurt today seeing that. You know, the chairman comes here with his family, his wife, and his dad comes to the games sometimes.

“I can imagine, of course, he’s… I know at that level you have to be thick-skinned, but he’s human, and he’ll be hurt by that because he’s probably looking at it and thinking, I’ve given so much. Of course, the fans want to see more—you know, this is a big football club.

“The last time they won a trophy was 2008; it’s a long time. But at the same time, I do believe if you spoke to him, he’ll be hurt because of what he’s actually put into the club.”

What has Daniel Levy given to Tottenham Hotspur?

While the Levy is feeling the heat, there are still a few positives from his time in charge. However, those positives do not extend to the actual football itself.

The chairman has built a state-of-the-art stadium, the training facilities are great, the club is making a profit and is even ranked amongst the richest in the world, but how much of this affects fans?

What supporters want to see is a club that is challenging for silverware. A club that is playing alongside Europe’s elite.

I mean Spurs used to be a constant in the UEFA Champions League, but now, Champions League football is no longer a given. The chairman needs to understand that it is the onfield stuff that matters most to the fans.
