Lucas Bergvall is desperate to play a key role in Sweden’s World Cup campaign as the Tottenham youngster gets set for his first taste of a major international tournament.

The planet often come to a standstill when the World Cup is on every four years, but that is especially true this time around, with the tournament expanding to a whopping 48 teams.

Every group game is thus crucial on the quest for a deep run into the tournament, and Spurs’ Lucas Bergvall is looking to make his mark on the biggest stage in Sweden’s first appearance at the World Cup in eight years.

Bergvall has won many admirers since his move to Tottenham two years ago, and the 20-year-old has been counting down the hours before Sweden’s first game of the tournament.

Tottenham’s Lucas Bergvall impresses with Sweden cameo

Bergvall enjoyed a clean sweep of Tottenham’s end-of-season awards in 2024-25, but the attacking midfielder failed to build on that last season, due to a combination of injuries and managerial upheavals in North London.

However, having tasted club football on the biggest stage, the midfielder has been dreaming of making his mark at the World Cup. In fact, he even admitted that he has been in the ear of Sweden boss Graham Potter about being in the starting eleven.

Ahead of Sweden’s tournament opener against Tunisia, the Spurs man told Fotboll Skanalen: “Of course, you’re ready and want to play all the time. But it’s up to the coach about who plays. It’s a dream I’ve had since I was little. To represent my country (in a championship).

“Of course, you always want to start and play. But I’m ready no matter what happens. Whether it’s starting or coming in. I’m incredibly excited about the World Cup.”

When asked what he told Graham Potter, Bergvall responded: “It’s not something I want to say here about what discussions we’re having, but in general it’s just to continue with what I’m doing.

“It’s up to coach, Graham. But I’m ready. It’s hard to say. It’s up to Graham who will play with each other. I’m ready if I get the chance.”

Unfortunately, Bergvall was not named in the starting XI for the match, but he did come off the bench to enjoy an impressive cameo.

The Spurs youngster hunted down the ball in the final third with just seconds left on the clock and won back possession with a determined tackle, which ended up being an assist for a second Yasin Ayari screamer.

Sweden teammates have been in awe of Bergvall in training

Bergvall came on as a substitute in Sweden’s most recent friendly against Greece, and it seems Potter sees the Tottenham man as more of an impact sub for now.

However, three of Bergvall’s Sweden teammates named the Spurs man as the one who has impressed the most in training in the lead-up to the big tournament.

A good World Cup will not only further boost the midfielder’s profile but will also improve his chances of becoming a regular starter under Roberto De Zerbi at Tottenham next season.
