Mauricio Pochettino is firmly in contention for Tottenham return this summer

Mauricio Pochettino could be in line for a sensational return to Tottenham, with Daniel Levy considering a managerial shake-up regardless of Europa League success.

It hasn’t worked out well for Ange Postecoglou in his second season at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Australian manager, who had Spurs in a brief title race after the first ten games of his first season, has struggled to replicate that same form, with Tottenham now firmly planted in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

The Lilywhites’ most recent 2-1 defeat against Nottingham Forest on Monday marked their 18th league loss of the season.

Should Spurs lose two more in their final five fixtures, Postecoglou would become the first Tottenham manager to suffer the most defeats in a single campaign.

Spurs prepare for life after Ange Postecoglou despite Europa League run

Despite Spurs’ dreadful domestic form, they’ve managed to keep things alive in Europe, reaching the semi-finals of the Europa League with a tie against Bodo/Glimt on the horizon.

However, reports now suggest that even European silverware wouldn’t be enough to save Postecoglou’s job, with Daniel Levy and the Tottenham hierarchy already planning to move on from the 59-year-old.

It’s understood that the club have begun exploring alternatives, with Brentford’s Thomas Frank, Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, and Fulham’s Marco Silva among those reportedly under consideration.

TBR Football have revealed another twist in the tale, with Mauricio Pochettino now said to be firmly in the running. The former Spurs boss could even be Levy’s top pick to take over from Postecoglou.

Mauricio Pochettino now a serious candidate for Tottenham job

Despite being dismissed in 2019, Pochettino and Levy have apparently maintained a good relationship over the years.

Currently head coach of the USA national team, Pochettino admitted months ago that he’d be open to a Tottenham return, and it’s now believed he’s a major part of Levy’s thinking as potential replacements are being weighed up.

Levy sees the Argentine as someone who could get the best out of Spurs’ current crop – a squad filled with young, top-tier talent.

However, while the 53-year-old is in contention, it’d be interesting to see if Tottenham can lure him to make a switch, especially with a World Cup on the horizon next year.
